Knowledge of Career's Ambassadors and Managers are truly civic and community leaders. During their sophomore year, our students go through in-depth social entrepreneurship training in order to identify an issue in their community and then propose, pitch, and pilot a solution to that issue. Students continue these Social Impact Projects throughout the rest of their high school career.
Below, a few of our students discuss their own Social Impact Projects!
Diamonds In The Rough D'eria and Donna
D'eria and her business partner Donna started an organization called Diamonds in the Rough in 2016. Diamonds empowers women in Overtown who have been affected by gender or sexually related crimes and provide them with mentoring and counseling, guest speakers for motivation, and interactive activities. Their program has already positively impacted the lives of 25 women and they hope to work with hundreds more in the coming years.
"Our goal is to expand and empower more women to be able to distance themselves from the target zone and give them the opportunity to have a safe space where they can speak up for themselves. We want women to be able to realize when they’re in unhealthy relationships and to be able to walk away from dangerous situations." - D'eria
The theme for this upcoming event is "Trapped Souls," where we will have guest speakers, a poetry performance, motivational movements, and other enjoyable things for women to overcome these tough obstacles.
Develop Leaders: The KOC Ambassador Program Chris and Marquise
Beat The Odds was created by Marquise and Chris in 2016 with the goal of teaching healthy eating and exercise habits to Booker T. Washington Senior High students. We bring in different types of exercise trainers to help make exercising more interesting. We teach exercises such as martial arts, dancing, yoga, and other forms of exercise that do not require gym equipment. While the gym is not really exciting or fun, at BTO, you will be doing other activities that help you lose weight and keep you engaged. We are trying to bring motivation and enthusiasm to exercising. Our events occurs once per month. Getting results will not come easy but with consistency, hard work, and the skills we’ll teach you, you will succeed.
We are also bringing in chefs and nutritionists to teach our participants about how to create healthy, affordable, delicious meals every day. Exercising is only half the process to losing weight. Without a clean and healthy diet, you won’t see any progress. People always have access to quick food. There's a fast food restaurant everywhere you go. Fast food does taste good, but it’s not healthy. Giving up fast food is a hard thing to do, so to combat that, our chefs will be introducing meals that will be better than fast food restaurants. Our program was made for anyone and everyone who wants to improve their health. But we can only show you the techniques and strategies. It’s up to you to implement them into your everyday life.
