The start of a new year is always cause for celebration, especially because we have a new class of students coming in! Our new freshman class is bigger and brighter than ever before, and will have more adept guidance from the classes above them. Additionally, those upper level K.O.C. classes will be progressing into more duties and responsibilities as the course moves forwards.
Two years ago we started Knowledge of Careers with a modest class of 20 motivated students at Booker T. Washington High School. Last year we expanded to Miami Senior High, where our class was composed of 10 students on top of the 30 at Booker T.. This coming year, between the two campuses, our K.O.C. student body will be composed of over 150 students! Our new freshmen will be bringing new ideas and passions to K.O.C., which will develop into Community Impact Projects and internships as they rise through the Knowledge of Careers ranks. We’re excited to meet them and see what they are looking forward to learning about!
Our class from last year was driven and dedicated to their studies and success within K.O.C.. Because of that, we’re proud to announce that 12 students from the last year have graduated and become our second Ambassador class. These students have already met a number of times and have begun brainstorming their Community Impact Projects, with subjects of focus ranging from gentrification to police brutality to homelessness and drug addiction. These students are motivated to make these projects successful, and are insightful in their methods of researching and implementing them.
Our Ambassador class from last year made astounding strides in their Community Impact Projects and professional skills development, and are ready to progress into their third year with K.O.C. as Managers. Their projects will continue throughout this year and next, but will be building out and improving as they make more connections and steps forward in their businesses. Additionally, they will be beginning their free SAT and ACT courses, which will prepare them for the content in the exams as well as teach them the strategies necessary for success. In conjunction with the exams, we will be providing the Managers with college application preparation, and may take some college campus visits with our students. As they progress towards choosing which colleges and universities they want to apply to, or which subjects they want to major in, we will be by their side with experts, providing as much assistance as possible along the way.
